The Colombian pop star has reached a settlement with Spanish prosecutors in the tax fraud case, just before the case went to court.

Last summer, we wrote about the fact that the Colombian singer Shakira was suspected of allegedly failing to pay 14.5 million euros, i.e. approximately HUF 5.9 billion, in taxes to the Spanish government between 2012 and 2014.

The singer would have been sentenced to eight years and two months in prison and a fine of 23.8 million euros if convicted.

Shakira, who has repeatedly denied that she did anything wrong, has now agreed “keeping in mind the interests of her children”. Because she wanted to avoid her children seeing that “their mother is sacrificing her personal well-being in this fight,” writes the BBCaccording to which the current agreement includes that the singer will pay 7 million euros and receive a three-year suspended prison sentence.

Shakira also added that although she followed the tax advice of renowned firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young, “unfortunately – and despite these efforts – the tax authorities in Spain took action against her, as they have done against many professional athletes and other high-profile individuals they did, draining these people’s energy, time and peace of mind for years.”

The entertainer had previously rejected the plea deal offered by the prosecutors, instead opting for a court hearing.

At the center of the dispute was Shakira’s whereabouts between 2012 and 2014, as prosecutors alleged that Shakira lived in Spain but listed her official residence elsewhere.

According to Spanish law, people who spend more than six months in the country are considered residents for tax purposes. Shakira however argued that he did not live in Spain during the years in question, but according to prosecutors, he spent at least half of those years in Spain, bought a house in Barcelona in 2012, and had a son with footballer Gerard Piqué in the country in 2013.

Shakira declared Spain as her tax resident in 2015. According to him, he has paid 17.2 million euros in taxes and has no outstanding debts.
