It all started with a dance… On April 20, 1901, the film directed by Béla Zsitkovszky was shown – based on Gyula Pekár’s idea. Its title: The dance. It was short, silent, had 24 dance moves, and didn’t survive. But we know that it was the first that Hungarians could see from Hungarian filmmakers, so starting in 2018, we will celebrate Hungarian film on this day.

But which one did most people see?

The Index In the podcast program of Kultúra’s column, arútluK, a small debate broke out about which could be the Hungarian film that most people have seen. Previously, the guest of the podcast was György Ráduly, director of the National Film Institute – Film Archive, who, according to Magnás Miska (Márton Keleti, 1949), and since this is his profession, we tend to believe it.

Even if we have read in several places that there are also Hungarian films with over 9 million viewers, such as Stars of Eger obsession Sons of a man of stone, but we are not doing justice in this discussion. It’s already good to be able to talk about Hungarian films – even if there are lessons to be learned from it.

In the conversation, we talk about how

  • what are the characteristics of Hungarian films,
  • Hollywood would be different without Hungarians,
  • filmmaking is an expensive genre and how
  • in addition to the numerous auteur films, historical films are also needed.
