Netflix’s new crime series Ripley wraps the most twisted story of Patricia Highsmith’s world-famous novel hero in a completely new guise. The series was largely filmed on Italy’s beautiful Amalfi Coast, and locals now fear that Ripley’s will attract even more tourists to the region, which is already popular with foreigners.

In the eight-episode limited series on Netflix, Andrew Scott plays the intelligent but morally dubious Tom Ripley (the 47-year-old actor followed in the footsteps of predecessors such as Alain Delon, Dennis Hopper, John Malkovich or Matt Damon), Highsmith 1955, Based on the novel by the talented Mr. Ripley, the story takes viewers back to the dawn of the sixties. The most important location of the plot is sunny Italy: most of the scenes were shot on the beautiful Amalfi Coast, which is also very popular with tourists. The Guardian now writes that the highly successful TV series may lead to a new rush of tourists to the region, and this has already caused concern among the locals.

The primary destination for travelers may be Atrani, located in the northern part of the Gulf of Salerno. The crew recorded most of the scenes in this seaside village.

The Amalfi Coast in the Campania region – named after the small town that is the jewel of the area – is already one of the most popular destinations in Italy, so the residents do not want more tourists to flood the area.

Antonella Florio, the owner of one of the local apartment houses, told the press that vacationers on the Amalfi Coast are already causing more and more annoyance. Florio is confident that interest in the region will only increase during the off-peak season. Luisa Criscolo, who also runs a hotel in Atrani, is afraid that the tourists coming to the settlement may even cause disruptions in traffic.

The Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the region’s sleepy villages, fabulous beaches and luxury villas exude the well-known “dolce vita” feeling of life, writes the BBC. Anyone who visits the area can feel as if they are walking in the land of frozen time: the world of the many historical monuments, small towns with an ancient atmosphere, cobbled streets, medieval churches, lemon groves, vintage cars and pastel-colored alleys will absorb everyone. Another nearby fishing village, Praiano, located east of Positano, offers a tourist experience similar to the aforementioned Atrani. But if you want to explore all the sights of the region, it is worth renting a car. In addition to the above, you should not leave the world-famous Naples and the ancient Roman city of Pompeii off your bucket list.
