There wasn’t much of a chance before.

Big Little Lies is based on the popular HBO series Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty it was originally supposed to be a limited series in 2017, but it was such a success that a second season was finally prepared for it in 2019. The series starred Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Kravitz, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and was joined by Meryl Streep in the second season.

Although HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys previously said he would be open to a third season, this was dispelled with the death of director Jean-Marc Vallée. Vallée died on December 25, 2021, of “severe cardiac arrhythmia secondary to coronary artery calcification”. Zoë Kravitz then responded to the question of whether there will be a third season of the series:

“I do not think so. We talked a lot about doing a third season, but unfortunately Jean-Marc Vallée, the brilliant director of the series, passed away last year and I just can’t imagine continuing without him. He was the dreamer of the series, so unfortunately that was it.”

But now Nicole Kidman made a statement at a weekend event that surprised everyone:

“I loved Big Little Lies. It came into my life at a time when my children were born and I was already thinking about retiring. Then there was this opportunity that Reese Witherspoon and I could do a series, which became a huge success. And just so you know: we’re preparing a third one as well.”

There were many mishaps during the filming of the second season of Big Little Lies

Not only did they mess with the director, but Meryl Streep also messed around a lot when shooting the scenes. Warning, lots of spoilers ahead!
