Paul Kim, with the call sign “Kilo”, arrived in Ukraine in August to support the counterattack launched to regain Kherson, he died on October 5, but the news of his death was only recently reported by the Ukrainian government.
Kim spent 12 years in the US Army, including in the elite unit No. 82 Airborne Division, as a captain. He also received Ranger training. When he traveled to Ukraine, he was no longer on active duty, but in the reserve force.
He fought in Ukraine as part of the Ukrainian Foreign Legion under the control of Kyiv (so not as part of the American forces), the Ukrainians did not provide accurate information about his rank and position. According to Kim, he went to Ukraine to “stop the Russians before we have to fight them in the West.”
Kim died in the area of Ternovi Podi, where he allegedly killed 12 Russian prisoners of war with his unit. The Russians tried to free their comrades with intense artillery fire and tanks, and the American captain also fell during the attack. He was 35 years old.
Paul Kim’s body will be brought home to America, where he will be buried with military honors.
In the past few days, through unofficial channels, Washington has acknowledged that American soldiers are serving in Ukraine, including at least one unit carrying out orders as part of the American forces. They, on the other hand, do not fight on the front, but control the distribution of munitions intended for the Ukrainians:
