The ruling party majority voted down the MSZP motion, which would have set the parliamentary vote on Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership for Tuesday, October 4, according to the Facebook post of Bertalan Tóth, who submitted the proposal. Apart from Hungary, Turkey is the only NATO member that has not yet ratified the two countries’ accession to the military alliance.

The government already submitted Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO accession application to the parliament in July, but László Kövér did not put it on the agenda until now. In response to Telex’s inquiry, the Parliament’s press department previously said: the vote on the two countries’ NATO accession is included in the parliament’s autumn agenda, but they did not reveal anything about when exactly this will take place.

At the end of June, before the NATO summit in Madrid, it was announced that all member states agreed to Sweden and Finland joining NATO. In order to finalize the process, not only the leaders of the countries must nod, but also the parliaments of the countries must sign the relevant laws. Everyone has done this by now, except for Turkey, which is against the accession anyway, and Hungary, which is waiting for an unknown reason.
