The government’s goal is that by 2030, 27 percent of the country’s territory will be covered with forests and trees. Sándor Farkas, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture (AM), spoke about this on Friday at Dóc in the Csongrád-Csanád county.

Farkas said that in the Settlement Afforestation Program announced in 2020, nearly 1,500 settlements with less than ten thousand inhabitants took advantage of the opportunity provided by the tender, and around 46,000 rowan trees were planted. This year, the government will provide HUF two billion in the program, and the number of trees planted will increase to 56,000 by the end of the year.

The state secretary stated that the changed meteorological conditions and periods without precipitation make the installations even more necessary. Settlement trees are about rows of trees, which provide shade, good air, and a pleasant environment. At the same time, afforestation is also taking place, 46 thousand hectares of forest in the last two and a half years installed in the country.

The government’s intention is to afforest as large an area as possible, and to plant as many ornamental and useful trees as possible in public parks, public areas, around kindergartens and schools, because this will improve the quality of life of the locals.

All this was said at a tree planting. Gábor Turda, mayor of Dóc (independent), announced that the settlement received twenty-two linden and ash trees in the afforestation program, thanks to which Dóc will continue to be greener, and they can also replace cut trees.

A year ago at this time in Hungary, 1.95 million hectares of forest were counted, which is 20.9 percent of the country’s territory. Since the turn of the millennium, 161,000 hectares have increased due to plantings.
