Debrecen must be developed sustainably!

Before the round table discussion, four more local companies received the Sustainable Debrecen award. The recognition can be given to business organizations that pay outstanding attention to sustainability in their operations.

– The city has undergone significant economic development and growth in recent years, and it will continue to be characterized by this in the coming years. Debrecen is one of the important pillars and bases of the European economy. This is an opportunity and at the same time a responsibility for us, since developing a city is only possible if we are able to fully comply with sustainability and environmental protection aspects. This is the joint responsibility of all of us – said László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, in his greeting.

He added that with the Sustainable Debrecen Award, the Future of Debrecen created a recognition that has become a truly prestigious award, and which shows the entrepreneurial thinking that helps Debrecen’s sustainable future.

The award, which has become popular among local businesses, was presented by Zsolt Ábrók, managing director of DVSC Handball Kft., Mariann Szegedi and János Vígh representing Panificio Trattoria Kft.; founder Zsolt Fülöp on behalf of Trans-Sped Kft.; and Éva Treszkai and György Barna Iszály took over on behalf of EPAM Systems Kft.

– Debrecen is a city where, in every age, they have built on local knowledge and cooperation. This is still the key to Debrecen’s success today. The managers and employees of the enterprises try to provide the best in their field, and we try to give everything to the environment so that it can be the best – said Ákos Balázs, deputy mayor of Debrecen. He added that Debrecen will apply for the title of Green Capital of Europe in 2025, and I would like to involve the winners of the Sustainable Debrecen Award in the preparation of this, so that they can help the city with their insights in the final success.

If we stick together here in Debrecen, we can also be at the forefront of sustainability

How much of a challenge is the transition to green thinking in the life of a company?

In the continuation of the evening, the representatives of the previously awarded companies sat down for a discussion and discussed, among other things, how smooth it was to switch to green thinking and more sustainable operations. Sándor Szabó said that their employees were enthusiastic about ideas that could be implemented easily, such as traveling by bicycle or electric scooter, planting trees or minimizing the use of single-use cups. – And we have to set an example in real estate development. We deal separately with the topic of sustainability in every investment decision. We notice that this is increasingly important in business life as well, he added. Gréta Rácz said that they try to involve their customers in green thinking.

– Our goal is to achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2026. We are in a lucky position, as our buildings were built with smart solutions, but we also try to pay attention to the attitude formation of our employees in various programs – shared Réka Makray. According to Péter Szabó, it is easiest to switch to simpler things, such as reducing the use of paper or planting trees. A bigger challenge was the technical transition, but their company’s technical team found good solutions.

The most difficult task is to transfer green thinking to colleagues. This is an ongoing task, but we try to increase their openness with community programs and competitions

he added.
