The space completed a month ago must be demolished

The left-wing city leaders handed over the renovated square between Nagy Jenő utca and Hungária utca, but according to press reports, they failed to breathe life into the public lighting on the north side of the square, so quite a few lights next to the square have been dark for weeks. On Tuesday, our colleague already noticed that a work machine was used to attack a point of the square, because the finished surface had to be demolished. It is not yet known whether there is a connection between the public lighting problem and the demolition, it is likely that this is the case, but at the same time it is also possible that there was a problem of another kind, since this work also had to be done urgently.

What had to be demolished?

As is well known, even though the left-wing municipality led by Attila Péterffy had almost five years to bring the Green Gate project under the roof, the left-wing municipality dragged out the works until the last deadline for accounting for EU funds. The previous city administration won funds for the Green Gate project in 2017, which aims to develop the complex of the Tünde House in the center of Pécs, tidy up the Memi Pasa spa, tidy up the surroundings of the tram once located on Ferencesek Street, electrically operated columns on Jókai Square construction, placement of electric car chargers, and the renovation of Ferencesek Street.

From the project, the reconstruction of Ferencesek Street was realized, which was postponed until the current city administration, because the previous city administration coordinated the development with the reconstruction works of the public utility companies. However, the Péterffys did not continue with the other development elements, but instead came up with the renewal of the area bounded by Hungária Street – Nagy Jenő Street – Petőfi Street.

In the framework of this, they did not carry out a large-scale development, but a smaller green area arrangement. In this regard, the people living in the area made several complaints, saying that the work did not progress at all for months, and on the other hand, according to them, more was taken from the green areas.

According to the promises, they should have finished the works by December 15 last year, but several problems intervened, and the contractor asked the municipality for an additional HUF 25 million. In the course of the work, it was revealed that the Pécs municipality was preparing to cut down a large amount of trees in the area as part of the green program, costing 2.5 million, which the deceased were able to prevent in the end. Graves were found on the plot, which made it necessary to re-plan the project, and in the end it was the only thing that saved the Pécs trees that were doomed to be exterminated. The question is why the city leaders, who recently prefer to consider themselves “green”, would not have originally implemented this concept. In any case, one of the latest election slogans of the current left-wing mayor, Attila Péterffy, is “success”.
