The Money Museum pays tribute to the MNB’s centenary with a temporary exhibition

Financial century – 100 years of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, a new temporary exhibition opened in the Money Museum on April 26. The choice of date is no accident: the law establishing the Magyar Nemzeti Bank entered into force on April 26, 1924.

A unique, informative exhibition shows the journey from the Austrian National Bank to the Austro-Hungarian Bank and then to today’s independent central bank. The exhibition makes tangible the activities and responsibilities of the Hungarian National Bank. It gives a glimpse into the life of the central bank, introduces the presidents and famous employees of the bank. Tangible memories, archival recordings, numismatic treasures, never-issued commemorative medal designs are within arm’s reach of visitors.

The temporary exhibition, which can be visited free of charge without registration, captures the attention of visitors by presenting important economic and financial historical events, using digital and static content, and interactive elements.

The exhibition, which can be visited until December 30, 2024, is an excellent additional program of the Hungarian Money Museum and Visitor Center permanent exhibition, which also commemorates the beginnings, including the work of Sándor Popovics, the first president of the MNB. You can get an insight into the President’s Office, you can see a contemporary bank branch, as well as a model of the Szabadság tér headquarters.

April 26 is also an important date in other respects. That’s when the MNB 100 national quiz competition started. In the competition, high school and university students can compare their skills. The questions of the competition, which lasts for six months, are mainly related to the history of the central bank, supplemented by economic and financial questions. Students can take home a total of 100 prizes during the competition. While the players who complete the given quiz win valuable material prizes every month, those who participate and complete all the quizzes for 6 months can even take home an Apple iPad as the grand prize.
