“I want to talk about the new totalitarianism built by progressive liberals, the crisis of the European Union (EU) and the conditions for the successful struggle for freedom of the sovereignists,” Tamás Deutsch summarized his speech at CPAC Hungary in advance.
According to the leader of the list in the European Parliament of Fidesz-KDNP, the progressives built a regime similar to the communists, but in contrast to them, they first outsourced the most important elements of state power to, among others, civil organizations, the mainstream media, and fact-checkers. Then “the exclusive exercise of power by the Soros network, the commandos of the open society, was also legally surrounded.” They made politically correct language mandatory, created an aggressive ideological hegemony with a single truth, tore apart the fabric of society and designated the “Soros network and the world of NGOs” as the leading force of society, as communism is the working class. In the end, they “made the law the handmaiden of their exclusive power aspirations”, by referring to the rule of law and abolishing it.
They mantra that they are über-smart and super-powerful, they know what to think, they own the “thought factories”, the artists, the universities, the media, the influencers, while they think that the intellectual abilities of the sovereignists are suboptimal and they cannot win. Anyone who deviates from the canon is pitied, excluded or fascismized, but one must not be a little Jew, “we have confused the communists, we will deal with them too”.
Among other things, the progressive liberals brought war, confusion, impoverishment and pushed the EU into crisis. He saw the best sign of this in an amendment adopted in the European Parliament (EP), which he says states: the right to an abortion belongs to every person who may be pregnant. In his interpretation, this means that the EP decided three weeks ago: men also received this right. (At the beginning of April, a resolution containing the phrase quoted by Deutsch in English about pregnant persons and reproductive rights was voted, but this is a document with no legal force beyond questions of interpretation.)
Deutsch believes that change in the EU is possible if June 6-9. in the European Parliament elections between “Two-thirds in the Hungarian parliamentary elections, two-thirds of the mandates in the European Parliament elections on June 9,” he declared. (This would mean that the governing parties would gain one more of the 21 domestic mandates in addition to their current 13 seats, which would thoroughly refute the recent surveys showing a loss of popularity.)
In addition, it is also necessary for the sovereignists to establish strong cooperation in the EP after the election. “This will not depend on us, the members of the European Parliament of Fidesz and KDNP.” (Fidesz has not joined a single faction since its departure from the People’s Party in 2021, despite the fact that it is tied to the Eurosceptic European Conservatives and Reformers (ECR) on several lines). Not all representatives in the fundamentally pro-Ukraine group would welcome Fidesz enthusiastically, but they are open to negotiations. KDNP remained in the center-right European People’s Party.) Finally, according to Deutsch, success requires the sovereignists to be in government positions in as many countries as possible. They can achieve this because “the force is with us”.
What is CPAC?
This year, the Hungarian mini-edition of the annual superconference (CPAC) organized by the (extreme) right wing of the American Republican Party, the CPAC Hungary in Budapest, was held for the third time. Every year, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is the keynote speaker (we wrote about his speech here). As in previous years, this year the Center for Fundamental Rights, which is heavily supported by public funds, is organizing the right-wing conference between April 25 and 26. Many newspapers were not allowed to enter the event on the grounds that it was a “no wake zone”.
CPAC was originally the annual convention of the American right since the 1970s, the first European forum, CPAC Hungary, was organized by the Center for Fundamental Rights in 2022. Donald Trump greeted the participants in a video message, Máté Kocsis, Fidesz faction leader and Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy spoke, among others.
