“I remember when it happened, or rather when the high dose reached south-eastern Hungary. I was 9 years old. My grandparents rented land, we called it a garden, others called it a hobby plot. We had some fodder corn, potatoes, onions, garden vegetables, 2 rows of grapes and some fruit trees.”

“A day before, we were out hoeing, weeding, eating whatever we needed. I remember the previous year the red onions were very stunted, but by May of ’86 our onions were wonderful. We were so happy with it, it had beautiful, healthy, thick green leaves. My mom remarked with relief, “maybe this year we’ll have a bit of luck and we’ll even be able to sell some of the grapes. We couldn’t finish weeding that day, so there was still work to be done the next day.”

“In the morning, we got on our bikes and went to the “garden”. Along the way, we saw a change in the land of many. We didn’t understand it all. Our onions were also yellowish-brown. As if it had suddenly dried up. It doesn’t exist that they were sprayed, not only ours turned yellow and not only the onions. The ears of wheat and barley were still green the day before, but the next day they seemed to have dried up. It was horrible to see.

“It’s already been a week since we first heard about the disaster on the radio and TV, and for weeks people were “fed” that nothing happened, but it doesn’t hurt to wash everything thoroughly. By then, the strawberries were already ripe in many gardens, how many of us ate them unwashed?” – written by.
