The onions were laid out, the wheat withered after the Chernobyl cloud reached Hungary

38 years ago, a terrible disaster shook the world, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the consequences of the explosion of block four are with us to this day. A huge amount of contamination got out into the open, and the wind covered a large part of Europe with the radioactive materials.

We were so happy with it, it had beautiful, healthy, thick green leaves. My mom remarked with relief, “maybe this year we’ll have a bit of luck and we’ll even be able to sell some of the grapes. We couldn’t finish weeding that day, so there was still work to be done the next day.”

“In the morning, we got on our bikes and went to the “garden”. Along the way, we saw a change in the land of many. We didn’t understand it all. Our onions were also yellowish-brown. As if it had suddenly dried up. It doesn’t exist that they were sprayed, not only ours turned yellow and not only the onions. The ears of wheat and barley were still green the day before, but the next day they seemed to have dried up. It was horrible to see.
