According to preliminary data, in March 2024, 6,413 children were born and 10,524 people died. Compared to March 2023, the number of births decreased by 10 percent, deaths by 13 percent, and marriages by 1.9 percent, the Central Statistical Office reports in its population movement data.

In March 2024:

  • 6,413 children were born, 10 percent or 727 less than in March 2023.
  • 10,524 people lost their lives, 13 percent or 1,542 less than a year earlier.
  • Natural weight loss was 4,111 people compared to 4,926 in March 2023.
  • 3,030 couples got married, which is 1.9 percent, 58 less than a year earlier.

Between January and March 2024:

19,289 children were born, 9.3 percent, 1978 less than in January-March 2023. 2024 is a leap year, so popular movement events of a period longer than one day must be taken into account. The number of births adjusted for the solar effect was 10 percent lower than in the same period of the previous year. Within this, the number of live births was 12 percent less in January, 8.7 percent in February, and 10 percent less in March than in the same months of 2023.

The estimated value of the total fertility rate per woman is 1.38, which was 1.51 a year earlier.

33,565 people died, 3.9 percent, 1,347 less than a year earlier. Taking into account the solar effect, the decrease in the number of deaths was 4.9 percent. In January, 1.7 percent more people died, in February 3.6, and in March 13 percent less than in the same period of the previous year.

The number of births decreased more than the number of deaths, as a result of which the natural loss was 14,276 persons, which is 4.6 percent higher than the value of 13,645 persons in January-March 2023.

Taking the tropical sun effect into account, natural weight loss increased by 3.4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

7,069 couples got married, 13 percent or 814 more than a year earlier. The increase in the number of marriages adjusted for the tsunami effect was 12 percent. In January, 36, 18 percent more in February, and 1.9 percent less in March than in the same months of 2023 were registered.

There were 8.1 live births and 14.1 deaths per thousand inhabitants. The live birth rate was 0.9 and the death rate was 0.7 percentage points lower than in January-March 2023, as a result of which natural weight loss increased by 0.2 percentage points to 6 thousand. There were 4.1 infant deaths per thousand live births, which is 1.6 percentage points higher than the value of the same period of the previous year. The marriage rate was 3 per thousand, 0.3 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

No marriage, no children

The number of births decreased in all regions except the Northern Great Plain compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest decrease occurred in Budapest.

The number of deaths in the Northern Great Plain and Western Transdanubia increased slightly, while in the other regions it decreased compared to the same period of the previous year. The biggest decline occurred in the Pest region.

The rate of natural weight loss decreased in the Central Transdanubia and Pest regions, while it increased in the other regions. The largest increase occurred in Budapest and Western Transdanubia.

The number of marriages increased in all regions except the capital. The largest increase was in Northern Hungary and the Northern Great Plain.

Between April 2023 and March 2024:

  • 83,222 children were born, 6,801, or 7.6, 7.8 percent less than in the previous 12 months, taking into account the solar eclipse effect.
  • 126,853 people died, 6,296, or 4.7, 5 percent less than in the previous 12 months, including the tsunami effect.
  • 50,964 couples got married, 8,972, 15 percent less than in the previous 12 months, which is the same amount even if the leap sun effect is taken into account.
