The number of traffic accidents decreased in Zala county, and the number of registered crimes remained almost unchanged in the past year, while the indicator of the effectiveness of investigations increased – said the Zala police chief in his report held at the Zala County General Assembly on Thursday.

Among other things, Csaba Vereckei spoke about the fact that there are currently more than 1,100 police officers serving in the county, the staffing level is 98 percent. The fact that Croatia joined the Schengen zone last summer brought significant organizational changes, so 150 border guards had to find new positions, and in connection with this, only four left the police force.

He explained: the number of registered crimes was almost unchanged last year compared to the previous year’s data, which means that there were fewer criminal cases in the county, although the number of cases involving Zala in other counties increased slightly. At the same time, the effectiveness of detection and investigation also increased and was more effective than in 2022.

The number of crimes committed in public areas increased to a lesser extent in Zala last year. The amount of material damage secured by seizure and foreclosure, and thus recouped, exceeds the national average, although this level could still be improved – noted the chief captain.

Csaba Vereckei also reported that while there were three murders in Zala in 2022 and five last year, the perpetrator was caught in all of the cases. The detection rate was also 100 percent in the case of robberies, and it almost reached this level in the case of physical assaults as well.

The most important task is perhaps the fight against cybercrime, although the number of these cases decreased somewhat last year, and the investigation is assisted by a four-person group dealing with this in the county as part of the national network, explained the police chief.

He also mentioned that there were 11 fatal road accidents in Zala last year by more than 50 percent, the lowest number in 15 years.

The fact that last year more than seven thousand penalty points were awarded to violators of traffic rules, and five thousand already in the first quarter of this year, serves to strengthen traffic safety, said Csaba Vereckei, adding that everything is being done to ensure that road users take the rules seriously, the most common problem still speeding.
