Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy announced in a press statement on Wednesday that the government is calling on fuel distributors and traders to adjust their prices to the regional average on a voluntary basis – otherwise, they will intervene with harsh means. This presumably represents the official price, although he did not provide further information on the possible steps.
The minister added that all this means that mainly in the case of two fuel prices – 95 gasoline and diesel – it is necessary to enforce that the prices must return to the regional average.
The objectively determined regional average is calculated by the Central Statistical Office (KSH), which is published every Friday at half past nine. This is the reference value where the government would like to see fuel prices, stated Márton Nagy.
The first publication of this kind took place on Friday last week, and it can already be seen that the industry players have adapted to it, so Magyar Olaj- és Gázipari Nyrt. (MOL) also reduced fuel prices in several steps this week. According to this, the price of diesel will drop from Friday to HUF 633, and the price of gasoline will drop to HUF 647.
However, according to the government, this is not enough, as the newly established fuel prices are still higher than the average level in the region, explained the minister. He added that the difference compared to the regional average is HUF 10 for diesel and HUF 27 for gasoline.
“In two weeks, the government will bring up this issue again, look at the evolution of prices and will intervene with hard means if the fuel dealers do not return to the regional average prices during this period.” said Márton Nagy.
