World Guide Dogs Day is celebrated every year on the last Wednesday of April, but the Hungarian Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired (MVGYOSZ) already organized a national meeting on April 20 to share experiences with four-legged assistance dogs. In addition, János Rithnovszky, the valiant knight who died in March, the founder of guide dog training in Hungary, gave the meeting a sad touch.

The Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired considers it extremely important to talk more and more about guide dogs for the blind, and World Day provides an opportunity for this.

Many people do not know how to relate to assistance animals, people have so many questions when they see a guide dog on the street. According to the association’s press release, Ágota Lukács has been completely blind since birth, lives in Tiszajenő and works in Szolnok. He has been helped by the guide dog for 26 years, according to him, contrary to popular opinion, they are not sad, just very disciplined and serious.

“They have a friendly look, but not for anyone to talk to them or pet them without the owner’s permission. Actually, they want the love, caress, and praise of their owner the most, nothing else,” said the routine owner, who added that they are not victims of their work or their owner, “as much as it is unpleasant for them to be miserable in vehicles, they must always behave in a disciplined manner and concentrate almost constantly while driving, they are also infinitely happy , because they can be with their owner almost every minute of the day…”

The national association organized a national meeting on April 20, the weekend before World Guide Dogs Day, at which trained and under-training guide dogs, volunteer puppy raisers, dog trainers, and visually impaired farmers using guide dogs shared their experiences. He also gave a sad note that the valiant knight János Rithnovszky had passed away the previous month, he was the creator of the Hungarian guide dog training.

A member of the local association, Erika Pintér, took part in the event, where a special lock wall was also inaugurated. On the wall are engraved padlocks with the names of visually impaired farmers and their guide dogs, Erika placed three padlocks.

“Buksi, Jamaal and my current dog: Odin’s names are on the padlocks. The weather was not very kind to us on this day, it rained occasionally, which made us feel as if Uncle János had shed his tears on us from up there.”
