At the last plenary session of the European Parliament’s cycle in Strasbourg, it voted its decision on the case of the Hungarian rule of law procedure. However, along with the usual text condemning Hungary, there were also amending proposals. Momentary politician Anna Donáth wrote several of these, and in one of them she “calls on the committee to withdraw its decision”, according to which Hungary previously received the EU funds due to it.

The amendments and the decision as a whole were voted on by the representatives, including Hungarian left-wing representatives such as Klára Dobrev or Katalin Cseh.

However, this decision of the European Parliament does not have any legal force, it can only be considered a political position.

The representatives of the European Parliament noted with regret the decision of the EU Commission to release 10.2 billion euros of frozen EU funds, which is why the EP turned to the Court of Justice of the European Union.

According to MTI, they wrote that the leaked statements of the former Hungarian justice minister should prompt the European Commission to reevaluate the payment of EU funds. They called it incomprehensible that, citing the improvement of the independence of the judiciary, the European Commission frees up funds for Hungary, while it “continues to withhold funds from other EU legislation due to ongoing deficiencies in the field of the independence of the judiciary”.

The MEPs supporting the adoption of the resolution reiterated that a more direct procedure should be used to re-examine whether Hungary has seriously and permanently violated EU values. They also expressed concern about whether the Hungarian government would be able to credibly fulfill the duties of the EU Council president in the second half of this year.

“The Hungarian dollar left has crowned the entire five-year European Parliament operation with the shameful political act of launching another political attack against Hungary, its own country,” said Tamás Deutsch at a press conference held after the vote. The head of the Fidesz-KDNP European Parliament election list for 2024 called the decision a political pamphlet, with which, according to him, “he judges the Hungarians, the Hungarian people, the joint performance of the Hungarian people, Hungary on the basis of lies, slander, and smears.”

Personally, as the leader of the list, I take this today’s dollar-left attack here in the European Parliament as an encouragement, and we will repel it with even greater strength and determination

– said the politician, referring to the fact that voters have repeatedly assured the government forces of their support precisely because of such left-wing political activities.
