The Balmazújváros City Stadium was completely full for the start, there was huge interest in the Hungarian Cup match between Nyíregyháza Spartacus FC Ferencváros. A full house welcomed the parties in the historic match, as Szpari reached the semi-finals of the series for the first time during its existence. In the meantime, Fradi was preparing to conquer the championship title as well as the first place in the cup, but the way to do this could be through the Szabolcs club.

The match started with a Ferencváros situation, but Barnabás Varga’s shot was confidently saved by Fejér. Szpari tried to attack, showed a tough, fighting attitude, thus making it difficult for the green and whites. At the end of the first quarter of an hour, Zachriassen went dangerously on the left side, but he strained after his pass, so he had to be replaced. In the meantime, the “host” also made their first big breakthrough, after the interplay of Gresó and Beke, Barnabás Nagy received the ball in a great situation, but Ádám Varga made a brave save. In the middle of the half, both teams could have taken the lead, first Gengeliczki threw himself into Barnabás Varga’s shot, then just a minute later Krisztián Tímár’s team created a chance, the visiting goalkeeper pushed Kovácsréti’s bomb from under the bar with an incredible display of gymnastics. Nearing the end of the half, the Nyírség team threatened again, Gresó thought that his daring shot from about twenty meters just missed the goal. Before the break, Marquinhos was too harsh, stepping badly on Fejér, but the Fradi attacker got away with a yellow card. Szpari stood bravely in the first half, and perhaps Nyíregyháza had more serious opportunities.

The second forty-five minutes started with Traore’s shot, but then Spartacus moments followed, first Gresó started in the middle, but Ádám Varga saved Ferencváros’s goal with another great feat. Two minutes later, Gengeliczki headed in, but Varga was in his place again. In the fifty-seventh minute, the referee blew Barnabás Varga’s “fall” inside the penalty area, but Varga’s penalty was saved by Fejér, just as he saved the following dangerous corner. Szpari fought hard, as a result ten minutes later, after a pass from Dominik Nagy, Márk Kovácsréti shot into the goal from the middle, thereby gaining the lead. Ferencváros immediately replaced, strengthening the offensive line. The stand-in Kodro created his own position, but Fejér again defended powerfully. In the last ten minutes, the game became pulsating, as Fradi attacked, which provided an opportunity for Szpari’s counterattacks. However, the home team couldn’t withstand the pressure, the NB I. guard turned the tables in five minutes, first Cissé equalized after Barnabás Varga’s pass, and then Szevikjan rolled into the net like a teacher – Fejér didn’t even have a chance. In the extra time, Sigér and then Novák threatened, but the equalizer was not possible, so Ferencváros reached the semi-finals of the Hungarian Cup.

With a master’s eye

– I feel that Nyíregyháza not only fought hard, but also played well Krisztián Tímár praised his team after the whistle. – I already said in advance that we will play our own game, which we partially succeeded in realizing. It says a lot about the match that one of the best in the field was the opponent’s goalkeeper. We worked out many situations, what we came up with worked. By the end, we ran out a bit, obviously we don’t work with as big a team as Ferencváros. We dictated a good pace, squeezed one of the best teams in the country, although that doesn’t matter now, as they advanced, so we couldn’t continue to write the club’s history. Despite all that, I am very proud of the team. I saw a fighting, winning mentality on the pitch, playing very, very well. I think this match was a confirmation that we are on the right track.
