As Portfolio also reported, new details about the home renovation program have appeared, and a very important provision is expected to be removed from the previous conditions. Energy modernization of family houses built before 1990 will continue to be financed from the subsidy, but there will be no requirement that the building must be connected to the mains gas network.
Why is this amendment so important? Based on Bankmonitor’s estimate, there may be approximately 2.2 million single-family houses built before 1990 in Hungary, slightly more than half of which have gas heating. Based on the data of the document named “National Building Energy Strategy 2015” (NÉS 2025), 36.6 percent of the buildings in question are heated with gas stoves and 21.6 percent with gas convectors. Based on this
up to now, around 1.2 million buildings could be eligible for support, but this number may rise to around 2.2 million by changing the conditions.
This is especially good news for those who until now have only had problems with the piped gas condition. The range of eligible persons is expanding, but the total amount is not increasing: families can still apply for support in the amount of HUF 108 billion, of which the modernization of roughly 20,000 houses can be financed. Because of this the “fight” for the discount can be even fiercer, as the available frame can quickly be exhausted.
That is why potential beneficiaries must pay close attention to the details, and it is advisable to act as soon as possible after the opening of the application opportunity.
