Relationship and cooperation are forever. The mayors of Tusnádfürdő, Nagykároly and Zomba came to Orosháza on the occasion of the 280th anniversary of the establishment of the settlement. In addition to the holiday, the purpose of the visit was to strengthen the existing sister settlement relationship. On April 24, the leaders of the settlements together with Mayor Zoltán Dávid signed the relevant document, hoping that the relationship will continue to be nurtured by future generations.

The big hall of the mayor’s office hosted a sister settlement celebration meeting on April 24. Jenő Kovács, Nagykároly, Zsolt Butyka, Tusnádfürdő, and Sándor Szűcs, mayor of Zomba, visited the town in connection with the settlement founding ceremony. The leader of the fourth sister settlement, Szenttamás, Radijov Debeljački, could not be present due to his busy schedule, but he also joined the event in spirit, within the framework of which the relationship between the settlements was officially confirmed.

– It is a great pleasure to be together on this solemn occasion. Today is really special, as we confirm the connection between our settlements with another confirmation. I think this is forever. No matter what happens, cooperation and attention will not cease – emphasized Mayor Zoltán Dávid.

According to the document, the purpose of the cooperation is to strengthen the existing sister settlement relationship, to deepen the friendly cooperation, in the firm awareness that this intention is in line with the intention of the civil community. However, before the signing, each mayor said a few words, recalling the relationship so far and expressing his hope for the future.

– It is very important for us to be able to confirm a cooperation agreement thanks to our predecessors. What we leave behind on paper will remain for future generations, and they will know that although a border separates us, we are actually together – said Zsolt Butyka, mayor of Tusnádfürdő. – It feels good to be here, because we have been in contact with Orosháza since 1995. I came here for the first time in 2008, and it was nice to see how the city and the spa work. All of this gave us a clue, and as then, now, and in the future we can work together for development, he emphasized.

Nagykároly’s manager, Jenő Kovács, reported similar experiences with Orosháza. For 30 years, the settlement has been a twin city with Orosháza. – I have been mayor for 20 years, and although I am not running now, I am happy that I was mayor. It feels good to be here again after five years and to participate in the ceremony. This is an important relationship and not because of the protocol, the main thing is knowledge and culture, he emphasized.

The speeches were followed by the signing of the documents, which officially confirmed the relationship between the settlements. Zoltán Dávid, as city manager, prepared a small gift for each mayor, and after the handover, a surprise awaited the mayor of Zomba.

– It has been 280 years since the Zomba families who were persecuted for their evangelical faith arrived in the territory of today’s Orosháza. The memory of the ancestors lives together with the city as past, present and future. Last year, I had the idea to treat our friends in Zomba with a special gift on the anniversary of the city’s founding. Together with Attila Varga, Pál Szabó, Máté Török, Csaba Szula and Béla Molnár, we created the decorative key of Orosháza, which we are now giving to Zomba as a symbol – explained Tibor Szilasi-Horváth, the creator of the decorative key.

Mayor Zoltán Dávid handed over the key, which symbolizes that Orosháza is always open to visitors from Zomba. Sándor Szűcs, the mayor of Zomba, added in this regard that this should be a key that opens several locks, so that their settlement always welcomes the residents of Orosháza.

– The sister city relationship is perhaps the closest between Orosháza and Zomba, since the ancestors of the people who still live here left there 280 years ago. We have strengthened this relationship for the third time since 2002 and I trust that Zomba will have a mayor after me who will continue to nurture this relationship – said Sándor Szűcs.

After the ceremonial signing, the program for the mayors of the sister settlements did not end. Since Orosháza has developed and changed a lot since their last visit, Dr. János Blahó, the titular director of Mihály Táncsics High School, invited them on a sightseeing tour. On the way, they touched several notable points, while the director told them in detail about the history of the city and the buildings.
