The history of the Szelim Cave

Several legends have arisen in connection with the formation. According to one of them, the Hungarians who fled to the cave died there during the Turkish subjugation. From the amount of bones, they conclude that the story may even be true, although the age of the remains points more to the time of the Tatar invasion. Many people believe that the inhabitants of the seven settlements in the area hid from the Turkish army in the cave. But they noticed a woman going to the stream to get water for her thirsty child. Following him, they found the Hungarians hiding in the cave, who blocked the narrow entrance to the cave. Then the Turks broke through the ceiling of the cave and suffocated everyone inside with “straw smoke mixed with brimstone”.
