István Láng, head of the National Water Directorate General, called the Sió lock the scepter of Balaton water management, which can do justice to the often conflicting demands.

This artefact is also the key to protection against extremes, he added, reminding that extreme weather is becoming more and more frequent. “We also like this lock because it provides us engineers with a technical dessert with its solutions,” he said, emphasizing that the lock can be a key artefact for the rehabilitation of Sió.

At the end of the handover ceremony, the Hugó Lampl Memorial Plaque on the wall of the lock’s technical building was unveiled. On the occasion of World Water Day, the reconstructed complex of works of the sluice was awarded with this architectural level award, recognizing its excellence in terms of design, technology, execution and fitting into the landscape.

Balaton’s drainage system was modernized with 15.5 billion forints of EU funding, out of 19 billion forints, the Sió lock and the Sió channel were rebuilt, wetlands were created, and the former working area of the lock became a public space.

The average water level of Lake Balaton is now 122 centimeters (compared to the water level in Siófok), which is an ideal start to the season, it was said at the presentation.
