The Economic Competition Office (GVH) issued a warning to Cup Revolution Kft., one of the largest Hungarian repo cup distributors, and ordered it to comply, because the company communicated in a misleading way about the effects of the cups and the redemption system on the environment, the Public Communications Office of the GVH announced. on Wednesday with MTI. In October 2022, the office initiated proceedings against the repohar distributor.

The GVH established that from August 5, 2021 to June 2023, some of the so-called provisions relating to the repohar system of the Cup Revolution it deceived consumers with its “green claims” (such as reusable, recyclable, sustainability, recycling, environmentally friendly operation).

While the company was unable to prove the validity of some of its advertising claims during the competition supervision procedure. Such was the case, for example, that “the use of returnable and washable glasses can reduce the waste production of events and catering establishments by up to 80 percent”.

After the start of the procedure, Cup Revolution reviewed and modified its operation at many points, for example, it introduced an application to help redeem cups, and announced further developments in 2024. Already during the procedure, with the intention of complying, the company amended its environmental protection, so-called “green claims” deemed infringing

In addition to the warning, the Competition Council of the GVH ordered the company to review all of its communication tools, with particular regard to the claims regarding the effects on the environment. Furthermore, develop a program that helps inform consumers about the operation of the repohar system.

The great repo war broke out in the summer of 2022, when suddenly more and more people spoke out against the companies issuing tokens for repurchased repo, primarily Cup Revolution, accusing them of skimming. The conflict escalated to the point that a working group was formed with the participation of repo companies, environmentalists and anti-token citizens, through the mediation of the Budapest Chamber of Industry.
