The tax inspectors found several thousand boxes of untaxed cigarettes in a house in the county of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) told MTI.

They wrote that the tax inspectors noticed men doing business on the street, exchanging money and cigarettes. The customer admitted that he had bought 10 packs of cigarettes without a Hungarian seal from the seller.

According to the information, the tax inspectors escorted a “cigarette dealer” to the country, who denied that he had excise goods in his home.

NAV’s cigarette detection dog found thousands of packs of illegal cigarettes in a hiding place carved into a wall. The tax inspectors seized 2,687 boxes of unsealed cigarettes worth around HUF six million.

The buyer escaped the inspection with a fine, but the seller must also be held responsible for violating the excise law and committing budget fraud, and can expect a fine of several million, explained the NAV.

Most recently, NAV made a big catch in a village near Bodrog, when more than a thousand bottles of champagne base material were seized. You can read our article about it here.
