It is worth comparing at the beginning of our evaluation paper that in Hungary in 2018, the domestic investigative and judicial bodies acted for a total of 79 thousand 3 crimes. Then in 2020, the number of delicts was already 162,412, while in 2022, the year before last year, it was 167,774. This is contained in the indicators of the Statistics Department of the Ministry of the Interior (BM). Last year, 178 thousand 172 criminals gave work to the domestic authorities.

The recently published national data of the Pénzcentrum show that, looking at the numbers of all crimes, the county of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok stood out last year, where – as they say – the number of crimes really skyrocketed and increased by 40 percent compared to the year 2022. Our neighboring county was followed by Hajdú-Bihar with a 28 percent increase, and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplé reached the podium with a 17 percent increase. It is true that the standard is slightly different in the latter area, as the amount of detected crimes jumped from 12 thousand 852 to 15 thousand 108. The growth rate of delicts was over ten percent in the counties of Pest, Komárom-Esztergom, Vas, Tolna, and Csongrád-Csanád.
It is good news for us that they did not experience any significant change in crime in Budapest and Heves county. However, the picture is even more favorable in Nógrád, as crime decreased there in the previous year, as the amount of crimes decreased by 14 percent. In Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, the ratio was 9 percent, and in Győr-Moson-Sopron, 6 percent. If we pay attention to the exact data, then in our narrower country, the BM crime statistics indicate that exactly 5,976 crimes were registered here in 2023, compared to 6,000 the year before last, which was just 3.35 percent of the national indicator.
And from this point on, it is worth evaluating the Heves county measures the most. Most of the time, our sharp-handed citizens proved to be active, as the number of thefts reached two thousand six hundred and twenty-eight, that is, 43.9 percent of the crimes committed in our county, and this figure was just 5.3 percent of the more than 49 thousand thefts in Hungary. Fraudsters also represented themselves in a fairly high number in last year’s criminal register, as criminal proceedings were initiated against them 514 times in Heves. This indicator is slightly more than 8.6 percent compared to all delicts in the county. But only 2.6 percent of the frauds committed in the country (19 thousand 704 cases).
On the Heves County crime list, disorder is third in line, as our authorities have just registered 300 such criminal cases. We accounted for 3.4 percent of the 8,709 riots nationwide.
Last year, 280 criminal proceedings were initiated against the perpetrators of the delict of driving while intoxicated in Heves. This indicator was 2.6 percent compared to the national rate (10,697 procedures). The fifth place in the narrower criminal register kept in our country was occupied by physical assault with its 195 criminal proceedings, which is 2.95 percent considering the national data (6607).
Among the other crimes in our county, vandalism stands out with 161 cases, followed by fraud using the information system with 156. In the future, 126 cases of driving under suspension are included, as well as 119 cases of harassment and drug possession.
Those committing trespass to private residences were also quite a part of the crime. In Heves, the number of criminal proceedings for this crime was just one hundred in the past year, and with this statistic we reached a rate of 7.6 percent compared to the national indicator of more than 1,300.
The number of road accidents in our region is also quite high, as 90 such traffic cases were registered, 3.4 percent of the 2,646 national cases.
It is also worth looking into the narrower details of the crime of bribery in our country. Although apparently there were only 45 cases of these delicts in our county last year, this number is 32 percent, i.e. almost one-third of the 137 criminal procedures for the investigation of the same delict conducted in our country.
According to the statistics of the BM, in the Heves county list, 48 were in the back region of those abusing unique identification marks, 30 were budget frauds, 28 were the perpetrators of the new psychoactive substance abuse crime, and 10 were drug dealers, 6- and blackmailers.
According to the indicators, the County of Heves ranked in the lower half of the domestic average in terms of crime in the previous year.
Among the violent crimes, assault stood out
According to the Statistics Department of the BM, violent illegal acts were present in our lives in Heves in the previous year, even if in a smaller proportion compared to other counties in the country. The authorities had to investigate seven of the most serious crimes, homicide, last year. Compared to the national figure, this was 3.2 percent. The 195 proceedings initiated due to physical assault mentioned earlier are quite a lot. Our authorities discovered the crime of sexual violence in 12 cases, otherwise 368 such proceedings were conducted in our country. Relationship violence has given jobs to the judicial bodies 15 times. Unfortunately, the crime of child pornography also prompted the authorities to take action, in eight procedures. In Heves, 32 perpetrators of violent crimes against property, robbery, were prosecuted, while this indicator was 536 in the country.
