In another fraud attempt, cybercriminals are trying to appear authentic by using the name and logo of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB). In an e-mail scam that is now spreading, criminals are trying to persuade private individuals to download a “MNB-supported” virus management program. The central bank announced: it does not create and support virus management programs or its use for either residential or corporate clients, reports adózóna.hu.

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) has been informed that unknown persons are sending emails to Hungarian individuals, the PDF attachment of which informs that by downloading a virus treatment program supported by the “National Bank of Hungary” you can protect your computer and mobile phone, as well as secure your banking client property.

In order to achieve greater credibility and win the trust of the unsuspecting customer, fraudsters use the name of the central bank, the company logo, and the coat of arms of our country. In order to download the fake virus management program, a link is also sent, by clicking on which you have to provide your personal and bank details to the malicious software. By entering sensitive data into the program downloaded in this way, the customer essentially gives the criminals control over their account. This program is not an anti-virus, your money will not be safe, and if you are not careful, criminals can get your savings, the portal quotes the announcement.

The central bank does not correspond directly with residential or corporate clients offering anti-virus or any other business solution, it does not create or support anti-virus programs, and it does not commission anyone to do so on its behalf or advertise it.

The MNB asks all bank customers to be careful! Do not install any software when requested by email and only download verified applications to your devices.

It is advisable to report such fraudulent attempts to the MNB and the police, whether they concern individuals or companies. If a customer has installed the program that was used by the fraudsters to damage it, it is worth reporting it immediately to the bank managing the account (in order to recover the amount) and to the investigating authority.
