Anyone who was alive at that time surely has some memory of the record snowfall experienced by the population of Hungary in January 1987. Miskolc was not in an easy situation either, local traffic was halted, in many places completely paralyzed, but several of the small settlements in BAZ county were also completely closed off by blowing snow and the incredibly large amount of winter precipitation.
1986-87 brought historic weather in many respects. On January 10, thanks to a Mediterranean cyclone coming from the south-southwest, an intense precipitation zone reached the Carpathian basin, and this was accompanied by extremely cold air of arctic origin accompanied by stormy winds.
The two resulted in serious disruptions in the country’s traffic in the late evening hours due to snow barriers built by hurricane-force winds. Winds of 100 kilometers per hour were measured in the Kisalföld, but in the rest of the country it did not fall below 70-80 km/h either. And the snow kept falling, thus, by the next day, a huge wall of snow, several meters high in places, closed off many settlements from the outside world, among them there were many settlements in BAZ county.
By afternoon, the situation escalated and became catastrophic. Thousands of vehicles were stuck in the snow, many settlements were completely closed off from the outside world. Even the snow shovels trying to save the cars on the roads turned into ice rinks were caught in the winter, so eventually the tracked combat vehicles of the Hungarian People’s Army had to be deployed.
-17 degrees were measured in the capital, and by January 12, a 20-40 cm layer of snow covered the country. A school holiday was ordered, several workplaces became inaccessible. Public transport was paralyzed across the country.
Small rural settlements were in the worst situation, some were struggling with food and fuel shortages after just 1-2 days. The government tried to remedy the problem with tracked vehicles.
