The mother who left her newborn child alone at a bus stop was given a suspended prison sentence

Pécs, Tuesday, April 23, 2024 (MTI) – On Tuesday, the Pécs Jury found her guilty of endangering a minor and sentenced her to one year – suspended for three years – of imprisonment for the woman who left her newborn baby alone at a bus stop in Fonyód in October 2021.

In a statement sent to MTI by the District Court, it was written: the 37-year-old defendant, who was raising her minor child alone, had been living in orderly conditions in Austria for several years when she met a man from Zala, by whom she became pregnant in 2021, but she hid her condition from the outside world and did not visit a doctor .

She gave birth to the baby alone on October 10 in a holiday home in Balaton, washed the newborn, wrapped it in a towel, and then – still without telling anyone – got into the car. After some wandering, he left the child alone on the bench of the bus stop in front of the prosecutor’s office in Fonyód – covered, protected on three sides – and traveled to Austria.

Not long after, dog walkers noticed the crying baby, who was later found by the emergency services to be completely healthy despite the conditions and the cool eight-degree weather.

After learning that the police were looking for him, the accused came forward and gave a detailed confession.

As it turned out, the woman suffers from a personality disorder, which could also be determined at the time of her act, and in addition, as a result of physical and emotional stress, she fell into a narrowed state of consciousness. Although the latter did not make him incapable or limit him from realizing the consequences of his actions being dangerous to society and acting accordingly, it did make it difficult for him to think and reason, the statement said.

The Kaposvár Court of First Instance sentenced the mother to one year – suspended for three years – in prison for endangering a minor following the indictment filed by the prosecutor’s office for attempted murder.

The Pécs Jury Board found the court’s verdict well-founded and upheld it.
