An angler caught a 2.5-kilogram fish on the section of the Hévíz channel near Fenékpuszta last August, and the Hungarian Mortuary Society (MHTT) sent the photo for identification. What did I catch? column.

“Based on its shape and stunted moustache, I guessed it was a hybrid, a carp. Do you think I am right?” OML put the question to the experts

According to the MHTT, the fish resembles a carp, but due to its short moustache, it can be considered a hybrid.

“Which carrion species could the other parent be? From the small body height, the concave edge of the dorsal fin, which is not even straight, as well as the gray fins, it can be concluded that it is a silverfish,” they wrote in the expert opinion.

It was also reported that since the fish is structurally more similar to carp, it is probably derived from spawning carp and milky silver carp, hence its name carp silver carp (Cyprinus carpio x Carassius gibelio).

In our country, Aranyponty Zrt. deals with the propagation of carp. The head of the hybrids resembles a carp, while their body and rounded-edged scales resemble a golden carp.

While this fish was a common hybrid in the 1960s, later it became less and less common. The reason for this was that the silver carp was introduced, which gained ground in pond farms and domestic waters and displaced the golden carp.

In 2021, a 9-kilo carp hybrid was found in the Kovács lake in Tokaj, and a 5-kilo carp hybrid in the Pródi fishing pond near Hajdúböszörmény. Check out the special fish, click HERE and HERE!
