During the regime change, the average Hungarian still drank more than 100 liters of beer per year.
The Czech Republic and Ireland consume the most beer in the world, according to a video showing data from the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), published by a data visualization Facebook page. The two countries have led the world ranking of beer consumption per person since the mid-1990s, and Hungary was then pushed out of the top 15.
In 1996, the average Hungarian drank less than 75 liters of beer, which is a drop of more than 25 percent compared to the more than 100 liters consumed in the year of the regime change. In 2020, according to FAO data, we were not even among the top twenty beer consumers, in that year 66.14 liters of beer were consumed per capita in Hungary. The last time we drank this little beer was in 1975, when we were still the 14th largest beer-consuming nation.
In 2021, 140.12 liters of beer were drunk on average in the Czech Republic, 116.33 liters in the second Ireland, but the Austrians also consumed over 100 liters, coming in third with 110.52 liters. The largest consumer of beer outside of Europe is Panama, which just slipped out of the top 10, where about 80 liters of beer were consumed per capita in 2021.
