Literary test in Hungarian, financial knowledge in mathematics at an intermediate level and labor law knowledge in history – we have gathered all the important information about the changes to the 2024 graduation.

This year’s high school graduation will be the first where, due to the 2020 National Core Curriculum, students can give an account of their knowledge based on the new requirements. It is worth noting that, while the new type of maths exam has become much more practical, the Hungarian exam seems to have stepped back decades, since in addition to the fact that, among other things, they can ask for memorization in the first part in writing, there is no need to write short practical texts (e.g. an application). Written history, on the other hand, changed somewhat in its structure and types of tasks, but not in its topics.

Changes to the Hungarian baccalaureate in 2024

Among the written baccalaureate exams, perhaps the Hungarian one will change the most, since here not only the topics, but also the structure of the exam differs from previous years.

In addition to text comprehension, the written test is expanded with a kind of literary worksheet, in which you can ask questions not only about titles, genres, poets, and writers, but also about memory texts that must be learned. (In previous years, a short practical text had to be written instead.)

In the second part, until now, it was possible to choose between argumentation, interpretation of a work and comparative analysis, but from 2024, students can only interpret a work or write a general essay explaining the topic. The latter, so that it does not contain only half-truths and even has a literary aspect, is not easy to write well.

Changes to the mathematics exam in 2024

The structure of the math exam does not change compared to the Hungarian one, but there are topics that have been moved from advanced level to intermediate level, but there are also examples of topics that no longer need to be known at intermediate level.

Among other things, the following economic calculations are included in the intermediate-level maths exam:

  • collective annuity
  • installment
  • tasks related to savings, investment and borrowing opportunities and their risk factors.

The topic of statistics has been expanded: until now, the students had to know the mean, the standard deviation, and the distribution, and this year they also have to know the quartiles.

Up until now, they have been asked for in advanced-level graduation exams, but from 2024, the following topics and concepts may also appear in the middle-level assignments:

  • Converting a 10-based number system to another
  • geometric probability
  • sum, product of events, complementary event, independent event, expected value.

In addition, for example, the topics of coordinate geometry, equations and functions have also been significantly truncated (for example, the sine, cosine or tangent function does not have to be represented.)

Changes in history assessment 2024

Similar to mathematics, the subject areas of the history graduation exam have changed. Among other things, the American War of Independence and the Golden Bull were moved from the upper level to the middle level. French absolutism or great power struggles in 18th-century Europe were excluded from the advanced exam topics.

Since the topic dealing with labor law and financial knowledge was transferred to the civics subject, this topic was also removed from the history graduation requirements.

In addition to the framework curriculum, those who are graduating from advanced level in history in the spring must know the persons, concepts, dates and events included in the pre-specified additional database.

However, the good news is that both advanced and intermediate level students have to solve the same type of tasks in this subject.

Overall, it can be said that the Hungarian graduation exam has changed the most, because compared to previous years, the students have to learn a lot of data even for the written one due to the literary tasks, not to mention that the new type of essay can be a challenge for many.

In comparison, maths and history have changed only in their subject matter, and the new requirements focus more on connections and solving practical problems.
