According to the indictment, a man owed 50,000 euros to the two Ukrainian-Hungarian citizens who kidnapped him and then kept the debtor in chains for days.
On the evening of July 21, 2023, they called the victim to the parking lot of a department store in Debrecen, and instead of talking to him, they threatened to break his leg and put him in their car. With that, he was taken to a small village in the counties of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg to the house of one of his helpers, and was held there after being deprived of his documents.
The two adult sons and daughters of the owner of the house knew about the crime, and all three helped the perpetrators.
The victim was beaten in the garage in the yard with a fist, a piece of wood and a metal baseball bat handed over by the girl, causing injuries that took eight days to heal. They then chained him at his feet and kept him there for days, demanding that he pay what he owed. He didn’t dare to run away, because they threatened to kill him along with his family, and a fighting dog also guarded the yard.
Two days later, he was taken to Hajdúszoboszlo, where he asked a friend to borrow 700,000 forints, which his captors immediately exchanged for euros. He also tried to ask for money from his relatives, who were not at home, so he was transported back and chained again. A few days later, they tried to repeat the operation, but then the victim was able to warn his friend that something was wrong, so when the criminals were waiting for the money to be handed over, they were able to escape and immediately went to the police.
The two perpetrators escaped, there is an international arrest warrant against them,
while the helper’s father and three children were detained and have been under arrest ever since.
The prosecutors suggested that the proceedings be carried out in the absence of the two culprits, and that if the accomplices confess to their crime, the father faces 7 years in prison, his children 5 years, and they are banned from public affairs for 7 and 5 years. The Hajdú-Bihar County Prosecutor’s Office charges the perpetrators and their accomplices with the more serious crime of kidnapping, and those involved in the abuse with the crime of grievous bodily harm it reads on the website of the prosecutor’s office.
