Construction work on the Kossuth Street development has begun. In the framework of the Félegyházán project, the city center will continue to beautify, in the coming months there will be continuous construction with phased solutions on the sections between Attila–Batthyány and Dózsa–Ady streets. The works involve traffic restrictions, which also affect pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, but the affected shops, such as Kossuth ABC, restaurants and the post office, will remain accessible during the entire construction period. We asked Mayor József Csányi about further details.

As we learned, the entire construction period is planned for 11 months, so handover is expected in March of next year. The investment concerns the renewal of the public areas of Kossuth Lajos utca between Dózsa György utca and Attila utca, and between Ady Endre utca and Batthyány utca on the opposite side of Kossuth Lajos utca.

– The main concept of the development is to improve the usability of the affected sections of the street for pedestrians, cyclists, and operators and users of business and catering premises. In addition, it was also an important aspect of the planning that, within the framework of the Green City project, it should fit organically with the already realized image of the section of Kossuth street towards the main square, essentially serving as its continuation. The change includes the modernization of outdated facilities, the resurfacing of green areas and sidewalks and bicycle paths used for pedestrian traffic, as well as the modernization of street furniture and public lighting.

In connection with the reconstruction, a network of green areas will be formed, which separates the pedestrian zone from the bicycle lane, and the bicycle lane from the roadway. The bicycle path will be resurfaced on both sides of the street, with a slightly curved design, which, however, does not hinder safe traffic. Renovated and new Peringer type benches and waste bins will be located on the street. New bike racks will be used to accommodate the bikes. The bicycle path planned for these sections of Kossuth utca, as well as the layout and range of the pavements and rest areas created to serve the pedestrian concept, will receive new public lighting candelabras in the public spaces, and there will also be a drinking fountain on the section between Dózsa György–Attila utca.

The terrain conditions of the area will also change. Highlighting the forecourt of the post office building, which is currently accessible by two stairs – or a ramp – we will bridge the approximately 30-centimeter level difference between the entrances and the street level by creating a long, shallow rise. In this way, barrier-free access will be possible in such a way that the level difference remains almost unnoticeable when driving on the street.

The protected row of sycamore trees is not affected by the project, it is the contractor’s express duty to protect it during the works. However, it was an important aspect during the planning that the sycamore trees remain in the green area during the implementation of the new public space allocation.

The use of materials for the Kossuth Street section, which is now being implemented, is the same as the pavements already used during the Green City project. The walkway will have an anthracite and sand-colored paving, and the bike path will have a smooth gray paving stone, which will be replaced by an anthracite combi paving stone that warns of pedestrian traffic at road intersections. The catering terraces will be covered with WPC.

On green surfaces when selecting plant species, we took into account the image of the already rebuilt section in the direction of Petőfi tér, and kept in mind the local environmental conditions. Thus, we preferred drought-tolerant species that require semi-shaded and shaded locations. The plant patches have curved lines, lawn and perennial surfaces alternate within the plant beds, and finally the color, habit and mass of the plants designed in the mixed perennial beds harmonize with the appearance of the already established vegetation. Due to the diverse species composition, the street section offers an experience in every season, as the different properties of the plants decorate it cyclically throughout the year, said the mayor, and finally he asked for the patience and understanding of the population.

– On behalf of my employees, I ask for the patience of the parishioners during the construction period and to drive with extra caution on the given section. We are building something very beautiful that will define the image of our famous main street for decades.
