Still, György Simonka has a challenger at Pusztaottlaka. In fact, two straight away. Based on the election list, not only Violetta Kocsis, who announced her candidacy at Péter Magyar’s Mezőhegyes forum, but also Miklós Szabó will compete for the post of mayor of the settlement in the June election.

Miklós Szabó led the village between 1990 and 2006. He told Magyar Narancs that he is running in the local government elections at the request of the population and with the unofficial support of two associations, because he would not have wanted Simonka to run without a challenger.

“There would be tasks here, on the other hand, I want to break Simonka’s horn,” he said.

On April 12, it was revealed that Elvira Pál-Árgyelán, the current Fidesz mayor of Pusztaottlaka in Békés county, is not running for the title of mayor, so the only candidate can be the former mayor of the settlement, the former Fidesz member of parliament accused of budget fraud, György Simonka.

A criminal case against György Simonka and 32 of his companions was originally initiated in the Capital District Court for the crime of budget fraud. The Central Prosecutor’s Office submitted the indictment in August 2019, and last June we wrote about Simonka working among alpacas, llamas and camels in a safari park in Pusztaottlaka. “My criminal case is pending, but I have to work in the meantime. It’s very nice when the guests come there saying what a great experience it was,” said the former representative about his work at the time. In January, it was revealed that Simonka’s case would be started all over again.

Last week Friday, at Péter Magyar’s event in Mezőhegyes, a local woman, Violetta Kocsis, announced that she would also run in the election. According to valasztas.hu, both he and Simonka received their recommendation forms on April 20, and Szabó on April 22. By the way, 274 people can vote in Pusztaottlaka, and only nine recommendations need to be collected in order for someone to be a candidate for mayor.

Miklós Szabó told Magyar Narancs that he does not know Violetta Kocsis personally, but he will consult with her in the next few days, because he thinks there would be more chances of defeating Simonka if only one candidate ran against her.
