With a halt in time, a few tens of meters lost seconds, we can already fall behind the leader in an urban orienteering competition. Ádám Petrócki, the president of the Vásárhely Hód-Mentor Sports Association, as one of the organizers of the Short-Distance National Championships to be held in Szentesen in September, told our newspaper that the biggest challenge of the 2-4 kilometer race is that the best finish the distance at the pace of an athletics competition, while holding a map. they also have to choose the shortest path to the destination. By touching checkpoints 15-20. – Usually, the results of the race are decided by a few seconds of time lost due to bad decisions, changes of direction, and fleeting detours. The winners usually complete such a distance in 12-15 minutes, he explained.
The president of the NGO said that they are making it as difficult as possible, but it is important to plan a coordinated route that can be easily read on the map instead of a labyrinth.
Although the competition is still months away, the Hód-Mentor SE and the Szeged Long-distance Running and Environmental Protection Association are organizing the event in full swing. In particular, they expect at least 1000-1200 athletes. According to Ádám Petrócki, one of the attractions of the event is that anyone can take part in the competition in addition to the professionals; You will be able to compete in 30 different categories. The organizers are also careful to prevent possible information exchange: runners of the same categories start with one-minute intervals.
The short-distance orienteering national championship will be held in Szentes on Saturday, September 14, with morning qualifiers and afternoon races. Recently, Mayor Zoltán Szabó and Ádám Petrócki signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of the city and the sports association.
