Unfortunately, we prefer manufactured things to existing things

--

On Monday afternoon, Boldog Gusztáv, head of the nature conservation district of the Körös-Maros National Park directorate, gave a lecture entitled “Earth Day” as a guest of the retirement club operating in the Lencsés Community Hall. We talked to the specialist before the program.

– We have been celebrating Earth Day for more than fifty years. About how many days does the prevention spell last?

– Usually at the lectures, everyone nods, plants a tree, buys a few geranium seedlings, then forgets the light is on, leaves the faucet dripping, gets in the same car, buys the nylon bag for the bananas in the store, etc. Obviously, as a conservationist, I see the situation a little more gloomily than the average person. Of course, people are significantly more environmentally conscious today than they were a few decades ago: there is a demand for saving birds and bee pastures.

– The energy crisis after the Covid-19 epidemic may have had some lessons: I became an electricity Nazi, the TV does not work in the empty room and we buy less and less sparkling water.

– It is clear that tap water is the best; on the other hand, you don’t buy the same water that flows from the tap, only the one that has bubbles in it, and then you even throw away the packaging. But unfortunately, we are used to liking manufactured things more than existing ones. No one drinks nettle tea, no one picks sage leaves to make tea, everyone swears by filter tea.

– What will you cover in your presentation?

– Among other things, I am talking about the importance of bee pastures and insect farms – which are very popular in kindergartens and schools. Also, I struggle around my own house with the fact that what my neighbors see is not weedy, uncut grass, but the natural habitat in my garden.

“If someone is looking for you, they will find that your house is in a one and a half meter thick jungle.”

“Obviously I can’t do that; the soil is not suitable for it. But wherever I walk in my garden, I cut small strokes, two-thirds of which are always resting after the latest mowing. I also always mow my lawn in front of my house so that they can see that it is not a jungle, but a front garden. My grandmother always had beautiful, colorful flowers in the front garden, with me the grasses produce the seeds, they look sensational.

– Going back to the first question, it is obviously much easier to instill the message of Earth Day in kindergarten.

– The point is that this should be told to the youngest children, and I also like to talk to the kindergarten teachers because they are usually the ones who scream when they see an earthworm. This then sticks to the child, and from then on he will scream for the rest of his life if an earthworm appears somewhere. You have to start this in time; you have to be very careful about what you put into the mind, mouth, and ears of a small child, because after that they carry it on for a very long time.
