the Capital Assembly would be filled with loyalists and barely known faces

--

The Fidesz-KDNP will completely replace its list in the capital: not only will the district mayors be expelled from the Capital Assembly, but the politicians who won a place as list politicians in 2019 are also not in the running, according to the list published on the official election website. Among the newcomers, there are many former and currently active members of Fidelitas, but the first 10-15 places on the list with a chance of entry were also several district municipal representatives. He is a member of the KDNP’s youth organization and a former adviser to Mihály Varga.

This year, there will be a significant change in the election of the members of the Capital Assembly: together with the mayor, representatives can now only enter the 33-person assembly from party lists, the mayor of the 23 districts will not automatically be a member. Therefore, it is of great importance who are in the first 10-15 places of the list, as Fidesz currently has 13 representatives in the “parliament” of Budapest, and two, on paper, independent representatives also vote with Fidesz.

Szentkirályi, Sára, Böröcz – these three names appear at the beginning of the capital list of the Fidesz-KDNP. After them, in the first 15 places that can be said to be runners-up, you can hardly find a name that is known beyond district politics. The old faces have all been replaced by the governing parties: even though they are lower on the list, most of them would be re-elected as mayors in their district, but there are some who will say goodbye to the membership of the General Assembly for good.

The capital list of the Fidesz-KDNP is not surprisingly dominated by the candidate for mayor, Alexandra of Saint King leads Szentkirályi was once a representative in the capital, between 2010 and 2014, during the mayorship of István Tarlós. Then he quickly became deputy mayor. When Tarlós lost the municipal election in 2019 and Gergely Karácsony became the new mayor, Szentkirályi moved from the capital to the government, where he then became government spokesman. Until Fidesz announced that he would be launched in Budapest this year. He then kicked off his campaign with a massive rant. Referring to the memorable sentence of Karácsony to Telex, he also said: he does not consider it realistic that he will be hit by the yellow tram, so he does not plan to back down in favor of another candidate.

the lord of Budapest, Sarah Botond came in second place on the list after it was revealed a few days ago that he is the Fidesz-KDNP mayoral candidate for the VIII. district. Sára was already the mayor of Józsefváros between 2018-2019, after the previous mayor, Máté Kocsis, instead sat in the parliament. However, when Sára ran again in the 2019 municipal elections, she lost to András Pikó, who was supported by opposition parties and organizations. After that, he became the head of the capital’s government office, which is now known as chieftain. In 2022, Sára also tried out for the VIII. and the IX. in the electoral district covering the district, but there too he lost to András Jámbor, who was then supported by the opposition. The head master took a leave of absence for the duration of the current campaign.

In third place is the former Member of Parliament, László Böröcz there is someone who is now the mayoral candidate of the Fidesz-KDNP in the 1st district. The politician is not currently a member of parliament in Budapest, but as the president of the local Fidesz, he often speaks on local issues, and together with Fidesz, he also fell out with the district’s right-wing faction. Böröcz was previously the president of Fidelitas for several years, and in 2022 he only entered the parliament from a list, since he ran as an individual in vain and could not win against the LMP’s Antal Csárdi in the constituency, which includes the V and I districts. He is the last known name on the first, defining stage of the Fidesz-KDNP capital list.

From the fourth place on the list, there are hardly known names. Franciska Janó-Veilandics he does not run in the municipal election in any district. He is currently the county president of the Youth Christian Democratic Union, which is the youth partner organization of the KDNP and the Hungarian Christian Democratic Union. A few years ago, even as the president of the Association for Christian Democracy, she stated that they had launched a training course for women interested in public life on how to wear make-up and dress. This association was last active on Facebook in 2022.

He is also not running in any district, but he was placed fifth on the list in the capital city Piroska Zsoltné Szalai Varga. He has a political background: first in 2012, he was appointed ministerial commissioner responsible for improving the position of women in the labor market, and then he became an adviser to Mihály Varga, who was still working as the Minister of National Economy at the time. He came into the news in 2017, even then by getting a renovated municipal apartment in Ferencváros at half price. Piroska Varga Zsoltné Szalai and her husband bought a renovated attic apartment for HUF 10 million, while similar apartments were sold for HUF 25-35 million at the time. In addition, they did not have to pay the purchase price right away, with favorable installment payments they can repay until 2032. Piroska Zsoltné Szalai Varga is currently working for the Economic and Competitiveness Research Institute of the National Public Service University and speaks as a labor market expert.

It is ranked sixth on the list Daniel Szécsényipractically nothing can be found on the Internet about him or his public activities.

The Fidesz member of Pesterzsébet came in seventh place on the capital list of the Fidesz-KDNP, Zoltán Havasi cost. Havasi is also running in the municipal elections in June, now the XX. as a representative candidate in the district. In 2019, he tried in another district, the 18th, but was not accepted into the board there.

It is ranked eighth on the list Ádám Krisztián Sinkovics, who, according to his profile, is not running as an individual in any district, even though he is currently deputy mayor in the independent but Fidesz-supported Ferenc Bese district in Soroksár. From his introduction, it is clear that he is a deep-rooted Soroksar, who started his political career in Fidelitas in 2012, and since then he has also been a municipal representative.

The other contender is in ninth place Béla Radics, who is currently the local government representative of Fidesz-KDNP in Erzsébetváros, and is also running in the district this year. Radics in the VII. was an active politician in the district in recent years. Like Sinkovics, he also started in Fidelitas, and is still in the youth organization today, as the president of Fidelitas in Erzsébetváros.

In recent years, Fidelitas regularly visited the meetings of the Capital Assembly: month after month, they disrupted the meetings with smaller performances (molino, music). These actions were always connected to the speeches of Zsolt Wintermantel, leader of the Fidesz-KDNP faction. They usually dealt with some topic that they considered a scandal, for example the donations of Gergely Karácsony’s movement. The mayor did not react to these actions, he just waited until the activists he called the “squirrel guard” finished their production.

In 2019, he won a mandate from a list in Zugló, and now he is in tenth place on the Fidesz capital listPéter Bojthe. The representative will also run in Zugló’s individual constituency No. 11 if he is not included in the Capital Assembly from the list. In 2022, Böjthé was again elected president of Zuglói Fidelitas.

Next place Dr. István Bence György is listed, who after a short internet search turns out to be a lawyer, he started his own practice in March 2021. György Kőbánya also starts in one of the individual districts, but he is not currently a representative in the district.

He reached the twelfth place Tamás Elekes, who is currently a municipal representative in Újbuda, only got here in 2019 from a compensation list. This year, the representative is the XI. also starts in one of the individual districts of the district. In 2022, Elekes also tried for a by-election in another district, but then the immediate candidate won.

To the thirteenth place Kamilla Réka Tóth came, he will not show himself in the district election. Tóth also strengthens the camp of Fidelitas members: he is currently one of the vice-presidents of the national presidency of the organization.

The next place To Sándor Attila Szarvas who obtained a mandate from the 2019 compensation list in the XVIII. district, According to his introduction, the father of 10 children has been a representative for a long time and will compete in one of the individual constituencies of his district again this year.

He only made it to 15th place Dr. Demeter Szilágyi, who is currently a local government politician in Józsefváros, was only included in the board in 2019 from a list. The VIII. district, according to his data sheet, he will not run this time, even though it seemed for a long time that the particularly active Szilágyi would be András Pikó’s challenger. Last week, however, it was announced that Sára Botondo, who is currently acting as the head master of Budapest, will be launched again.

The full Fidesz-KDNP list of 96 candidates can be browsed here. Other places on the list include, for example, Ferencváros representative Andrea Gyurákovics, who this year is challenging Krisztina Baranyi, head of the Kutyapárt’s capital list, as mayor.

Zsolt Wintermantel, the current faction leader of the Fidesz-KDNP in the capital, came to the barely finished 22nd place.

Wintermantel is now running again for the post of mayor in Újpest, the district he lost in 2019, but he is also running as an individual, so he will return to district politics if elected. The Csepel mayor candidate of Fidesz-KDNP, István Dudás, was also added to the list. Csepel is interesting because the current mayor, Lénárd Borbély, who was ousted from Fidesz, is running against Dudás as an independent. The part of the list between the 20th and 40th places is occupied by the mayors running in the districts, including Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi (V.), Rudolf Dombi (II.), Nobert Kovács Balázs (VI.) and Krisztina Fonti (XII.) too. Among the mayoral candidates, László Böröcz was the only candidate.

Fidesz won 13 seats in the Capital Assembly in 2019. According to the previous system, even the mayors of the 23 districts sat here, this was supplemented by the places obtained from the compensation list. Mayor Fidesz was elected in seven places in 2019 (V., X., XII., XVI., XVII., XXI., XXII.). Ferenc and Ákos Szabados, mayors of Soroksár and Pesterzsébet.

Since the district mayors are automatically no longer allowed to sit in the Capital Assembly after this year’s election, the current 13 representatives of the Fidesz-KDNP will probably all say goodbye to Városháza Street. Among those who won a place on the list in 2019 are Dr. Gábor Bagdy, former deputy mayor István Tarlós, and former VI. the district mayor, who is not running for re-election this year, will certainly not be there, they will not run anywhere else. Attila Ughy in the XVIII. is running for mayor again in the district, and Gabriella Dódity is trying again in neighboring Kispest. They were also placed between the 20th and 40th places on the list, from where they could hardly get into the General Assembly.

What kind of list?

Almost to the day, exactly half a year before the municipal election, the Fidesz majority in the Parliament also rewrote the election rules in the capital. At the suggestion of Mi Hazánk Mozgalom, the list election system abolished in 2014 was restored in Budapest. After the municipal election on June 9, the Metropolitan Assembly will once again not be occupied by the district mayors, but 32 of its members can be elected by the citizens of Budapest based on a list election system (the 33rd place belongs to the directly elected mayor). In practice, this means that the voters of Budapest will receive one more ballot than in 2019: in addition to the candidates for district mayor and representative, as well as the candidate for mayor, they can also vote for party lists.

With the list election, based on the results so far, Fidesz is unlikely to win more seats, but the Dog Party and Mi Hazánk may enter the Capital Assembly. There could easily be a scenario where Karácsony will also need the votes of MKKP representatives to run the capital – we wrote in our previous article.

The list of other parties will be as follows:
