Hungary has signed a military and defense industry cooperation agreement with the United Arab Emirates, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky announced, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense (HM). The head of the ministry also reported on the event on his social media page, in which he highlighted that a diplomatic bridge had been created between Hungary and the United Arab Emirates.

According to the statement, the Minister of National Defense in the United Arab Emirates discussed the possibilities of military and defense industry cooperation with Mohammad Fadhel Al Mazrouei, the Minister of State for Defense Affairs of the Gulf state. Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said:

with the signing of the agreement on this, the negotiation of military cooperation between the two countries can officially begin.

The minister called it an important opportunity to get to know the defense capabilities between the countries, as well as to identify common areas in the field of research, development and innovation.

“The cooperation signed here can help ensure that the striking ability and deterrent power of the Hungarian Armed Forces, equipped with modern equipment and made up of highly trained soldiers, is unquestionable, guarantees Hungary’s security, and the military industry also contributes to economic growth.”

said the minister, according to the ministry’s announcement. The head of the ministry emphasized that the strengthening of the relationship with the United Arab Emirates, which has one of the defining economic and military powers of the Arab Gulf region, can complement the Hungarian military development program, whether it is about research and innovation for military purposes or even the production of military equipment.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasized that Hungary, as a member of the European Union and NATO, takes the view that it is necessary to develop cooperation with the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, from the fight against terrorism to border protection, in the spirit of expanding defense connectivity.

“It is enough to think about the Russian-Ukrainian war, changes in grain production in the region may cause supply problems in the Middle East and North Africa, illegal migration may increase, and the threat of terrorism may increase”

– added the minister, pointing out that the United Arab Emirates plays a significant role in the action against international terrorism and in strengthening the stability of the two regions.
