The capital would reduce the number of berths in Budapest, however representatives of shipping organizations and travelers are also against the drastic reduction. Mihály Tóth, spokesperson for the Association of Personal Boaters, spoke about the problems in Trend FM’s Turizmus.com program.

The city government’s plan to limit the number of boat ports in downtown Budapest has stirred up the standing water. The biggest debates are about the Újlipotváros coastal section, where only 9 of the existing 24 ports would remain after settlement.

Mihály Tóththe spokesperson of the Association of Personal Boaters emphasized in the radio interview that shipping is an integral part of Budapest, but most residents of the capital prefer to experience ships only as a sight, and rarely travel with them.

When asked what exactly is the real problem with shipping in the capital, Mihály Tóth said: Budapest needs more ports, not fewer. A drastic reduction in the number of berths in the downtown section of the Danube would result in the boats would be clogged with the engine running on the water, which would cause even more noise and air pollution. The spokesperson added that maneuvering between vehicles also increases the traffic safety risk.

Mihály Tóth emphasized that it is a historical problem that the houses were built so close to the river in Budapest, but this does not mean that shipping should be restricted or prohibited, after all, vehicles will not skip the Budapest section, he said. It would improve the situation if the shipping companies were not only given the beach use license for one year, because it is not possible to manage properly with such a short period. If companies could plan for the long term, they could more easily renovate ports and improve services, he added.
