With the exception of Ferenc Szalay, who did so today, all Szolnok mayoral candidates-candidates signed up on April 20, the first day of the collection of recommendations and the start of the campaign, to officially be among the candidates with the support of the population. At the moment, eight people would make themselves available, of course, it is possible that new actors will also appear.
No one was taken by surprise by the announcement of Tegyny Szolnokér, which brings together the opposition parties, and the Fidesz-KDNP, that the former is running for Mihály Györfi and the latter for the reigning Ferenc Szalay for the position of mayor.
Opposition candidate Zoltán Radócz collected 46.77% of the votes in 2019, while Szalay received 47.8%, i.e. the competition was extremely close. We can assume that the proportion of pro-government and opposition sympathizers in Szolnok voters has not changed radically, but the new candidates and the national political atmosphere may still cause surprises in the county seat.
In addition to the two most likely candidates, the aforementioned Györfi and Szalay, Mi Hazánk’s candidate Sebestyén Becsei, the Labor Party is running Mihály Bencsik, Tibor Gedei and Krisztián Soós are running for mayor as independents, and Áron Tóth, supported by the LMP, and Minden Döntés Sámít ( MDSZ’s candidate, Attila Németh, also wants to compete on June 9.
Of course, this does not mean that they can start automatically, as they must collect the necessary recommendations. The number of eligible voters in Szolnok is 54,756 and 70 polling stations covering 12 individual constituencies will await voters.
