This week, in five counties, covering a total of 2,300 hectares, specialists will exterminate mosquito larvae using biological methods, the National Disaster Management Directorate (OKF), which is responsible for the implementation of the program, informed the Hungarian Broadcasting Office on Monday.
In the following days, biological larval fertilization will be carried out from an airplane in the upper reaches of the Tisza in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, at Lake Tisza and in the Szolnok area.
In the vicinity of Sopron, in the area of Szigetköz, Csepel Island, and around Baja and Mohács, the protein-containing preparation that destroys the larvae of biting mosquitoes is delivered into the water by car, occasionally by boat, or on foot. This is all the more necessary because in recent weeks, wetlands suitable for biting mosquitoes have developed in many parts of the country.
As a result of the early spring, mosquito larvae appear in increasing numbers along the rivers, but in some places you can also meet full-grown individuals. The preparations used against mosquito larvae do not affect other organisms. The current cooler weather slows down larval development and favors getting the job done.
THEDue to the rainy weather, bloodsuckers are not only able to develop along rivers and lakes, many of their species lead a particularly close-to-human lifestyle, breeding in water-filled objects around houses.
Since organized mosquito control cannot be carried out on private plots, it is important to continuously empty containers and barrels filled with water around the house, which serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, the announcement drew attention.
