On Saturday, we went to the late-night evaluation, where the creators present could (also) hear opinions – praise, criticism, direct advice – about their films in terms of topic selection, visuality, narrative, composition, vision, atmosphere, editing.

Balázs András Muhi, award-winning film producer, film director, jury president, evaluated this year’s field separately on Sunday. As he said, he is always surprised by how many films are made in the country. All genres were present at the Vépi festival. And while, according to his previous experience, fiction won the prize at independent film festivals, there was not much of it here. In addition to documentaries and scientific informative films, they were also able to see animation, educational films, TV genres and, to their great delight, experimental films. There were really great, good, less good, mediocre and weaker films in the field, and the awards were easily decided, he said. Making a film is perhaps the most difficult genre, he underlined, and then quoted the Italian film director and screenwriter Giuseppe Tornatore: It is not a coincidence that a film is bad, but that it is good.

The Sweet Élét corner was also active this year with delicious cookies, the Let’s Get Together Vépért Egyesület undertook the preparation of the potluck lunch – according to the unanimous assessment of the jury and the guests, their pepper potatoes were awarded an Oscar. On Sunday, the dancers of the Jáde Hastánc Klub presented a show category production to the guests of the festival. Finally – as is tradition – the date of the next Vas-Film has been revealed: the 21st festival will be held on April 26-27, 2025.
