Regarding the budget ideas, the left-wing Budapest Metropolitan Municipality decided to implement the “Pedestrian Crossing at the Astoria” idea – this is included in the capital’s municipal document, in which they also mention that the Budapest municipality will provide HUF 40 million for the implementation of the zebra crossing from its 2023 budget.

The money will be used to build a completely new central island pedestrian crossing with traffic lights at Astoria, crossing Rákóczi út, which will be coordinated with the existing traffic light systems. A bus stop will also be relocated for the sake of development. Barrier-free crossing is ensured for people with reduced mobility with a two-centimeter curb recess. In order to help the visually impaired, a remote-controlled buzzer will be installed, tactile elements will be built, and the wear layer of the road surface will be replaced under the entire pedestrian crossing.
On the road section in question, Rákóczi út has 6-7 lanes and is quite busy, with thousands of cars passing by every hour, and the pedestrian traffic is much higher than on an average road section in Pécs. In comparison, however, in Pécs, the left-wing local government spends 40 million on a pedestrian crossing at Kürt Street, only 10 meters long, crossing a two-lane road, without even a signal light or special equipment for the visually impaired, where, of course, there is no need for a central sidewalk island.

Pécs mayor Attila Péterffy and his room propagandists began to explain themselves in paid advertisements in recent days: a sidewalk of “adequate width” must be built in Kürt Street, the utility pipes under the sidewalk must be replaced and the stormwater drainage must also be solved. a special stone must also be placed. In addition to these, a 15-meter long glass fence will be installed where there is no closed fence. One of the 40 million lights will be placed to illuminate the crossing, and six road signs will also be painted, they argued.
Péterffy: he talked about the same sex of zebras and ducks
At the general assembly, the representatives were waiting for an answer as to why it costs much less to establish a pedestrian crossing in Mohács compared to Pécs, since five smart zebra crossings are being built there for 17 million.
Confused, Péterffy said in the assembly that “in his opinion, you cannot compare the zebra with the duck, they are both animals, but they are not of the same sex”. Before the completely confusing sentence, he also said that renovating an existing pedestrian crossing is different from creating a new zebra crossing, the two are completely different things.
On the other hand, the installation of a pedestrian crossing in the capital that we also presented strongly calls into question the authenticity of Péterffy’s statement, which is confusing anyway, since a much more complex and new pedestrian crossing is being created in Budapest, as much as in a small street in Pécs.
