The Fidesz candidate was left without an opponent in Venice

It is already quite certain that there will be a new mayor of Venice, as the previous mayor, Gerhard Ákos, did not accept the recommendation forms, so the Fidesz-KDNP candidate will run for the mayor’s title without a rival.

Gerhard Ákos, the mayor of Venice, became the leader of the city in the colors of the Regélő Tradition Preservation Association in 2019, and also won a majority in the representative body. The association also applied for the 2024 local government election as a nominating organization, but the National Electoral Commission (NVB) resolutely refused to register the association on April 20, 2024.

NVB 187/2024. its decision no. states:

the National Electoral Commission refuses to register the Regélő Tradition Preservation Association as a nominating organization in the 2024 election held in a joint procedure for members of the European Parliament, local government representatives and mayors, and national government representatives.

According to the law, “the organization that wishes to place a candidate or list must be notified to the National Election Commission by the person authorized to represent the organization after the election has been scheduled.” In this case, however, “the mandate of György Sarf, who acted at the time of the organization’s announcement, to represent the Regélő Tradition Preservation Association did not exist at the time of the organization’s announcement, as its term had expired.” All of this means that the Regélő Tradition Preservation Association cannot run in the municipal elections, and accordingly, the website of the National Election Commission shows that Mayor Gerhard Ákos did not even pick up the recommendation forms on April 20.

On the website of the NVB, it also appears that the only mayoral candidate in Venice, György Krausz (Fidesz–KDNP), has already submitted the recommendation forms, because the system displays the status “Announced” next to his name. György Krausz announced this on his Facebook page:

It is a very uplifting feeling and a serious confirmation for me that so many people have assured me and all members of my team of their trust. We were the first to pick up the recommendation forms and the first to drop them off at the local election office! However, we do not stop here, as we continue to collect supporting signatures and listen to Venice’s opinion! We believe that Venice can do more with us!
