According to Dr. Cork, the smell and taste of the Unicum complex is most similar to some kind of medicine, and he was not wrong in that, since it was originally made for medicinal purposes, it became known as a stomach tonic and digestive aid. Later, however into a popular drink became popular in cafes and bars, and its characteristic bitterness quickly became its trademark.

Although its original recipe is still shrouded in seven-sealed secrecy, it is certain that the basis is a careful mixture of herbs and various spices. Today, of course, you can get several different versions, including plum and coffee versions.

Among other things, Cork compared it to Jägermeister and Fernet, but at the same time clearly considered Unicum to be the most bitter of them all. But that didn’t stop him from making delicious cocktails out of it.

Zwack & Soda is mostly combined with the flavors of lime, cucumber and mint, while Zwack Negroni is combined with orange, sweet vermouth and gin. Of all of them, however, the cocktail nicknamed “Császár” seemed to be the most striking, in addition to Unicum, it also contained vermouth, curacao, and orange juice.
