According to the central bank governor, we are not mature enough for the euro.

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is “committed to the successful and safe introduction of the euro in Hungary”, but “Hungary is not yet at the appropriate level of euro maturity”, Central Bank Governor György Matolcsy answered the written question of Péter Balassa, Member of Parliament from Jobbik on Monday.

Balassa would have been interested in exactly the following:

• What conditions are necessary for the introduction of the euro that Hungary cannot fulfill?
• What is the Government doing to meet the convergence criteria?
• When does our country plan to join the euro zone?
• Is it possible that in Romania, which also joined the EU later, the euro will be introduced earlier than in our country?

The representative from Jobbik put his questions to the governor of the central bank on November 3, who now answered in two and a half pages. Matolcsy explains that the MNB is thinking more strictly about the introduction of the euro than the so-called Maastricht criteria, known as the criteria for joining the euro area.

Accordingly, the Hungarian central bank developed and published in 2020 the set of conditions called Maastricht 2.0, which “in addition to fine-tuning the original nominal criteria, also takes into account new real criteria”. The central bank governor refers to this set of criteria when he says that “Hungary is not yet at the appropriate level of euro maturity”.

At the same time, he adds that with an appropriate economic policy, the level of development necessary for the safe and successful introduction of the euro can be achieved in Hungary in the medium term, and the MNB’s main goal is that the Hungarian economy will join the euro area in a prepared and competitive manner.
