Surely everyone has felt that in the circle of family, friends, and acquaintances there are many more birthdays in certain months of the year than in others. Many people think that most children are conceived on New Year’s Eve and born in September, but domestic statistics do not fully reveal this.
On the exciting, interactive graph on the KSH website, you can look at it broken down by year, and you can even observe the average of the last fifty years from the point of view of which days and periods of the year the most and least children are born. Anyone born after 1970 can even see how many other compatriots were born on the same day.
When are most babies born?
According to the latest statistics for 2020, July 30 is the “most popular” date of birth. Three years ago on this Thursday, the most children were born in Hungary: a total of 346. And if we look at the period from 1970 to 2020, there is no big difference: most people were born on July 25 in the last fifty years. Looking at the aggregate table, it is quite clear based on the color shades that most children are born in Hungary in the months of July-August-September. In other words, those who think that most children are conceived on New Year’s Eve were not so far from the truth.
Fewer babies arrive on Sundays and holidays
It is perhaps not a big secret that fewer children are born on weekends and holidays. The table clearly shows that every week there are two days next to each other marked in lighter green: Saturday-Sunday. Of course, this does not show the babies, but rather the insistence of obstetricians on working hours. It would be interesting to see how much all of this has changed in 2021, when the free choice of doctor in the maternity wards of state hospitals is no longer available – unfortunately, there are no statistics on this yet. In 2020, the least number of them were born on December 25. Looking at the aggregate table from 1970 to 2020, January 1st seems to be the least popular birthday. It is also clear that, as September passes, paler shades dominate the table: in other words, slightly fewer babies were born in October-November-December than in other times of the year in the last fifty years.

When are most babies conceived in Hungary?
If we don’t take into account premature births – which are around 8% in Hungary – then, based on the above statistics, it is clear when most children are conceived: in the months of October-November-December. It is possible that the parents calculate in advance that the baby will be born in the warmer months, but we rather suspect that with the colder weather in autumn and at the beginning of winter, the couples are more inclined to snuggle, which will then happen in the summer of the following year, in September. tangible results.
