The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has adopted new rules that must be taken into account during the distribution of next year’s Oscars. The essence of the new directive is that if an underrepresented social group does not appear in the subject of a work or among the crew members, it cannot compete for the best film award.
THE Representation and Inclusion Standards – i.e. Representation and Inclusion Guidelines – has also been published on the Internet, as well as its detailed rules here they can be known.
According to the document, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is introducing the new rules because they want to ensure that the works nominated for the best film award better reflect the composition of the world’s population. For this very reason, next year only works can be nominated in this category that meet at least two of the following four rules:
- the film features actors who are members of underrepresented social groups, or the work deals with such groups,
- a certain part of the crew members participating in the production consists of members of such groups,
- the studio responsible for the film provides opportunities for members of such groups in the form of scholarships and internship programs,
- the distribution of the film involves at least one high-ranking person who is a member of such a social group.
The document also does not remain indebted to which groups are considered underrepresented. These can be specific ethnic groups – Asian, African-American, Native American, Middle Eastern, etc. –, members of LGBTQ groups, women or people with certain physical disabilities. There are even separate rules for the four cases, the first, for example, is fulfilled by the film only if at least 30 percent of the actors appearing in secondary roles come from two underrepresented groups.
Creators applying for the category may therefore have to do some calculations due to the new regulations, but it is important to note that even then it will not be particularly difficult to meet the requirements. For example, it will be enough if one of the protagonists of the film is black and the marketing of the production is managed by a female senior manager.
Of course, this was just one example out of many, besides this, it will be possible to comply with the new regulations in countless other ways that have little influence on film development.
In addition to the above, the Academy has introduced several new essential rules, some of which also narrow the range of works that can be entered into the competition. Next year, for example, it will no longer be accepted if a film was only shown in drive-in cinemas. From the years of the pandemic until now, this was enough for the entry, but with the disappearance of the pandemic, only those works that were also played in movie theaters are taken into account, in addition, the nominated work must remain on the air in a certain geographical area and for a certain period of time.
