Films that may be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar in the future must address “underrepresented social groups” either through the crew or in the film’s story.
The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has adopted new rules for next year’s Oscars. The 97th Academy Awards will be held on March 2, 2025 in Los Angeles.
One of the most important changes is that from now on, only films that meet at least two of the 4 representation and inclusion standards (Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry) established by the film academy can apply for the main prize.
The description of the rules can be read by clicking here; their essence is that members of underrepresented social groups – women, LGBTQ people, people of color or other ethnicities, deaf people, people with physical or mental disabilities – are also represented by the subject of the given film, or that the crew provides them with a chance in some way. The first possibility is that such persons are present in the subject of the film or among the actors; the second is that many of the professionals in creative, creative positions are like this; the third is that the staff provides a paid internship or training program to those involved; the fourth is that more than one stakeholder takes a role in the marketing activity.
Further rule changes now allow up to three composers to receive separate Oscars if they all made a significant contribution to a film’s score. Previously, the composers working on the film’s music could jointly receive an Oscar statuette. In addition, the short list of the original soundtrack category, which will be published at the end of December, may include 20 candidates instead of the previous 15.
The Film Academy will no longer accept a film being screened in a drive-in theater in order to meet the screening requirements for entry. The drive-in cinema option was accepted even during the coronavirus epidemic, when films presented on streaming and VOD platforms could also apply.
Animated films can also compete in the Best International Film category for the Oscar if they meet the entry requirements for both categories.
