Index – Abroad – Bear sticks were pulled from a tree to take a selfie with them

--

On April 18, the North Carolina Wildlife Service, at the request of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, arrived at a location where a witness filmed a group of six people pulling bear tusks from a tree in order to take selfies with them, reports IFL Science.

Both bear cubs managed to escape the group, but one of them reportedly bit someone. One of the animals was later found and taken to a rehabilitation center where it will be kept until it is old enough, the other animal is still being searched for.

Ashley Hobbs, NC Wildlife’s Resource Commission’s BearWise coordinator, said the buck that was found appeared terrified and was shaking.

We searched the area for the second bug but did not find it. We hope that he was returned to his mother, because he would not survive alone at such a young age

said James Tomberlin, supervisor of mountain operations.

American black bears are found almost all over North America. Female bears often leave their pods somewhere safe, such as a tree, while they forage, but come back for them later. Touching or feeding bear cubs can cause habituation to humans and the mother bear may abandon her cubs, so wild animals should never be approached.

At this time of year, mother bears emerge from their dens with cubs experiencing the outside world for the first time and are very dependent on their mothers to feed and protect them

Superintendent Colleen Olfenbuttel said. He added that anyone who tries to get close to a bear cub puts not only the animal’s safety, but also his own safety at risk, because if the mother bear is not too far away, she can try to protect her cubs.
